Director of Photography & Media Production
I became interested in photography a few years before studying art and design at university. Even though my greatest strength at the time was as an illustrator and animator I would drive around motorway junctions at night experimenting with time lapse photography, capturing vehicle light trails on the cross overs, there were so many options with the bridges and road junctions. After living in Seville and Milan for almost three years I returned to London with the sole purpose of joining the film and television industry. When a friend pulled an old 16mm Bolex camera out I knew I wanted to be a camera operator, to be the person that decides how to frame a shot. Working as a runner on various short films and later as a camera assistant on a long-term BBC2 comedy drama my break came when I became staff camera assistant for Positive Film and TV, based in Camden. With demanding directors, who used to be cameramen themselves, they reviewed all of my work regularly. They appreciated my value of composition, but ingrained in me the importance of working at speed, often under pressure, whilst maintaining a professional and amenable approach with anyone on set to ensure a positive environment was created all round. The learning curve was steep but I worked my way up to head lighting cameraman and was shooting 3 broadcast series a year for different Discovery channels until becoming freelance in 2006. I worked as a lighting cameraman on BBC shows such as Inside Out, The Money Programme and The One Show, interviewing the likes of Alan Sugar, Gordon Brown and Bill Gates. I've worked as Director of Photography on BBC1 cooking shows, geological documentaries for National Geographic and The History Channel and long-term music programs for ITV2 both in observational documentary and presenter-lead content before branching out into more sports-based programming.
